What is required to become an acupuncturist?
There are some basic requirements to become an acupuncturist. You need to be nationally certified, you have to go to school for three years full-time, you have to have 250 documented patients, and you have to have 500 clinical hours before you become an acupuncturist. So I will tell you definitely, and I should say, that every acupuncturist you see will be nationally certified; even though we all get the same training, obviously how we deal with that training and what we do for our patients could vary significantly. Just like martial arts where there are many, many forms of martial arts, there are many forms of acupuncture, as well. My particular style is traditional Chinese medicine.
So, a lot of your decision in choosing an acupuncturist should be your comfort level, even during your initial discussion – for example, for me, with all of my patients we probably have a 10 – 15 minute phone conversation before we go any further because the reality is that I want you to feel comfortable when you come into my office.
